Disclaimer
Accuracy of Results
This app relies on automated systems, and to produce accurate results, it assumes that you follow the guidelines while scanning ingredients. Non-compliance with these guidelines may result in inaccuracies for which "Taste Halal" will not be responsible.
Product Scope
The app is currently designed for grocery products, medicines, healthcare items, cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste etc. However, please note that it should not be used to scan meat or chicken products. The app can only verify ingredients and provide information about their Halal status, but for meat or chicken, it's important to confirm zabihah details directly with the suppliers.
Barcode Scans
For barcode scans, we primarily rely on the OpenFoodFacts database to provide the product's ingredients. In case a product is not found within their records, we use our intelligent systems to look into other publicly available data to find the ingredients for the product. For any source of data we use, we mention the sources to communicate transparency. Once the ingredients are fetched, we use our own extensively researched database to determine the Halal/Haram status.
We do not recommend users rely solely on barcode scan. In case of any misleading information provided by OpenFoodFacts or any other data sources, we won't be liable for any consequences. Therefore, we suggest using the Direct Text Recognition option, since it's more accurate.
Direct Text Recognition
For direct text recognition, we do not rely on any third-party database. Instead, we use our own database to examine the ingredients. Hence, this method is recommended for checking the status of any product.

Hidden Ingredients
The app only examines the ingredients you provide. If there are hidden ingredients in the product or if the manufacturer has not listed all ingredients on the packaging (this is very rare and does not happen often), "Taste Halal" is not responsible for these external factors. If you find anything suspicious, please contact the product manufacturer for clarification, alternatively, reach out to us via our dedicated social media channels or email.
How does Halal Scanner work?
We continually enhance our AI algorithm to ensure the highest accuracy in results. The app can identify ingredients in two ways: via direct text recognition or barcode.
Ingredient Classification
Our model processes the ingredient text and compares it to our extensive database of 7000+ ingredients. Each ingredient is classified into one of four types:
Permissible to consume without any doubt according to Islamic Shariah.
Not permissible to consume without any doubt according to Islamic Shariah.
Subject to uncertainty regarding its Halal or Haram status. This category includes ingredients based on animals that are permissible to consume if slaughtered according to Shariah, and ingredients where scholars have differing opinions, such as Shellac, Prawns, or Shrimps.
Permissible if the product is suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Some ingredients can be derived from either plant or animal sources, and if derived from plants, vegetables, or synthetic sources, they are permissible.
Further Evaluation
If ingredients are classified as Doubtful or Halal if Veg, we take additional steps to reduce uncertainty by evaluating other ingredients listed. For example, if a product mentions vegetable oils, then Lecithin in the product is likely plant-based. Many ingredients are produced using synthetic or plant sources on a commercial scale, making them permissible based on this fact.
In Islam, all food is Halal by default (except for those explicitly prohibited) until it is proven to contain anything Haram.Read more
Barcode Method
Relies on the OpenFoodFacts database or other relevant data sources available on the internet for ingredient information. While we regularly check the accuracy of scanned ingredients, this method is subject to imperfections. We encourage using direct text scanning for the most accurate results.
